There's nothing behind it." - Andy Warhol A photo of Andy #Warhol's "Screen Test: Mario Banana #1" being viewed (that shadow at the bottom of the frame is an #audience member's #head) at the #ArtInstituteofChicago's #AndyWarhol exhibition. The #Screentests were short (3m-ish) #films in which the subjects either stayed still or performed some simple action, creating a 'semi-static' portrait. Warhol's #portraiture was a major portion of his work, and he's credited with at least partially spurring a revived interest in #portraits after abstract expressionism. His portraits are some of his most famous and iconic images (especially in the 70s, he used their commerical popularity to fund his more esoteric projects). Given my love of portraits, its likely not surprising that I dig that portion of his work a lot - and though I like his famous silk-screened pop images, it's his more intimate photos like the screen tests or his #Polaroids that are most evocative for me. Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in what the American Medical Association has called an "epidemic" of violence. Almost all of those names are transwomen, almost all of them are people of color. Trans individuals are the target of violence at a rate *much* higher than the general population. Transwomen at a higher rate than that. Transwomen of color at an even higher rate than that. They are one of the most marginalized, vulnerable, and targeted group of people in America (and globally) Please keep this in mind when you consider the effect of anti-trans rhetoric coming from people in positions of authority in our society. That list is - in part - the accumulated consequence of those words, policies, and actions. Matthew 25:40.
